The Sons and Daughters of Italy Key West Lodge #2436 has partnered with the Tropic Cinema to launch "Italian Night at the Movies," a monthly film series designed to raise funds for the lodge's 2026 scholarship fund benefiting area high school seniors of Italian descent. Screenings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month through May 2026, with the next installment taking place Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Tropic Cinema.

The Jan. 7 feature is the 1968 romantic comedy Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, directed by Melvin Frank and starring Gina Lollobridida. The film follows Carla Campbell, a woman who has reinvented herself as a leading citizen of San Forino, Italy, as three former American GIs each believe they are the father of her daughter Gia. The cast also includes Telly Savalas, Phil Silvers, Peter Lawford, Shelley Winters and Lee Grant. The film is widely credited as an inspiration for the musical Mama Mia!

Event logistics are designed to encourage attendance and community participation. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 6:15 p.m. Attendees will be offered a complimentary "taste of Italy" with Duetto’s Pizza served before the screening. A 50/50 chance drawing and a raffle for a set of four Italian plates and bowls will raise additional funds, and Italian wines will be available for purchase through the Tropic Cinema concession. Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased online at TropicCinema.com or on the day of the event at the Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St. Series tickets are available: purchase four films and receive the fifth at half price for a total of $90.

Beyond entertainment, the series carries local significance for education and equity. Scholarship dollars targeted to students of Italian descent aim to lower financial barriers to higher education for a specific cultural community, while also strengthening cultural ties that contribute to social support networks. Community-based fundraising like this can enhance social cohesion and provide modest economic supports that influence long-term opportunities tied to health and well-being, including educational attainment, employment prospects and access to resources.

Sponsorship by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts links the program to broader public investment in local arts and culture. For residents weighing participation, the series offers both a cultural evening out and a direct way to invest in local students who may otherwise face gaps in college funding.
