A county mayor standing on a paddleboard to sign a proclamation is about as Florida Keys as it gets, and Monroe County is using that image to launch its America 250 celebration in Big Pine Key.

Monroe County commissioners approved the county’s plans on April 20, setting up a series of community-driven events and activities from May through November 2026 to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial. The kickoff is scheduled for Monday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Wooden Bridge Marina on Big Pine Key, where Mayor Michelle Lincoln will sign the proclamation while balanced on a stand-up paddleboard.

The event is being framed as more than a photo opportunity. Visit Florida Keys and the Tourist Development Council are providing funding through unappropriated fund balance and logistical support, and the kickoff is tied to National Travel & Tourism Week, which runs May 3-9. The public is invited in “business meets Keys casual” attire and to bring their own board, with live music, local food trucks and a conch horn call planned for the marina gathering.

The county’s broader America 250 Florida Keys program is built to stretch well past July 4, 2026, when America250 says the country will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Monroe County’s calendar includes Flag Day activities on June 14, a Duval Street parade and Truman Waterfront celebration in Key West on June 27, a Key Largo event on Sept. 12, and a sunset celebration at the Old Seven Mile Bridge on Oct. 10.

The county also has drone-show events planned for Nov. 17 and Nov. 21 in Islamorada and Big Pine Key, tied to the 9/11 memorial exhibit from New York. Officials say residents and organizations will be encouraged to take part through volunteer service projects and local storytelling efforts, giving the anniversary a local cast instead of a single ceremonial moment.

The county’s rollout reflects how Monroe County is choosing to launch America’s 250th: with a spectacle that fits the Keys, but also with a schedule that reaches schools, businesses and neighborhood groups across the island chain. A dedicated county webpage will carry updates as the celebration moves from Big Pine Key to Key West, Key Largo, Islamorada and beyond.
