Special Olympics Monroe County Summer Games Draws Athletes to Marathon
Marathon High School hosted Special Olympics Monroe County's Summer Games on March 7, uniting every athlete, coach and partner across six sports for the first time in county history.

The Keys' Special Olympians have made waves at the state level in recent years, but March 7 belonged entirely to Monroe County. Athletes, coaches, volunteers, law enforcement partners and community leaders gathered at Marathon High School for a full day of unified sport and celebration at the program's in-county Summer Games.
The day opened with ceremony. Inside the Marathon High School stadium, law enforcement partners and local dignitaries stood alongside athletes as a torch passed around the track, marking the start of competition. From there, athletes launched into games in their chosen sports: basketball, cheerleading, soccer and track and field.
Five Special Olympics cyclists also joined the gathering, though their competitive moment had come the week before, when they completed a time trial in Key West.
For Ruth Coleman, Special Olympics Monroe's sports training and competition manager, the day carried a significance beyond the medals and scoreboards. "This is the first time in history in Monroe that we had every athlete, every coach and every partner in one place for those six sports," Coleman said. "We are so grateful to our Florida Keys community. They wrapped their arms around our athletes."

Coleman described the event as a historic convergence for the program, one that brought together every corner of its operation under a single roof for the first time. The Summer Games served as friendly in-county competition rather than a qualifier or showcase for outside audiences.
Special Olympics Monroe County is still looking for volunteers to support upcoming events. Those interested can reach Ruth Coleman directly at 305-923-0288.
