Perry Central schedules orientation for incoming seventh graders and parents

Perry Central Community Schools is inviting incoming seventh graders and their parents to a July 30 orientation at Perry Central Jr.-Sr. High School, a hands-on step meant to ease the move from elementary school into junior high. The session will begin at 6 p.m. in the cafetorium, and the district says it is designed to help students feel confident and comfortable before their first day of school.

The evening will start with a presentation, then families will have time to visit the junior high building, walk through classrooms and practice opening lockers. The school said no RSVP is required, and the cafetorium doors will open 15 minutes before the presentation. Perry Central also said the orientation is a chance for families to ask questions and get a clearer picture of seventh-grade expectations before classes begin.

What parents and students will hear goes well beyond a welcome message. Orientation materials will cover new graduation requirements, diploma types, an early look at a four-year plan, school policies and procedures, student supports including 21st Century Scholars, and seventh-grade class schedules. That information matters because the transition to junior high often brings a different pace, more independence and a heavier load of planning for the years ahead.

Perry Central’s own materials frame that transition inside a larger district identity. The school describes itself as a community where people often say it feels like family, and it says students learn, grow and thrive in a safe and caring environment. Its stated mission is learning, with an emphasis on preparing students to meet the challenges ahead. The district also points to pathways in engineering, nursing, education professions, agriculture science, construction tech, diesel tech, business and advanced manufacturing, underscoring why early planning begins to matter as soon as students enter seventh grade.

The orientation comes just days before another major back-to-school date in Leopold. Perry Central’s Back-to-School Night is set for Monday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., with booths in the cafetorium for new student registration, meeting teachers and other start-of-year business. The district’s back-to-school newsletter will include information on book rental, free and reduced lunch applications, cafeteria news and other general enrollment information. Perry Central’s first day of school is Aug. 6, putting the July 30 orientation at the front of a tight countdown to the start of the year.
