Tell City Firefighters Battle Early Morning Garage Fire, Protect Neighboring Homes

Fire crews responded to a fully involved detached garage fire at 1972 Indiana Ave. just before 4 a.m. on March 18, battling heavy flames that threatened two neighboring properties and damaged an electrical service line before bringing the blaze under control within 20 minutes.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames visible throughout a 12-by-20-foot masonry block garage on the 1900 block of Indiana Avenue. Crews quickly determined the garage roof was compromised, ruling out an interior attack. Instead, they conducted a defensive exterior operation, directing water into the burning structure while simultaneously applying water to two adjacent homes whose vinyl siding had already begun to melt from the heat.

The fire also burned through an electrical service line running from the residence to the garage, causing the line to fall to the ground. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Although the blaze was marked under control within 20 minutes of arrival, firefighters remained on the scene for several hours afterward to address lingering hot spots in the masonry structure.

The cause of the fire has not been reported, and no damage estimates were available as of publication. Multiple local units responded to the call, which came in during the pre-dawn hours of March 18, 2026.
