Brunswick will mark the National Day of Prayer at noon Thursday at the Town Mall Gazebo, with organizers framing the gathering as both a faith observance and a civic moment for the wider Midcoast.

The event comes as the National Day of Prayer reaches its 75th anniversary and as the country moves through the 250th year since its founding, milestones the National Day of Prayer Task Force says give the 2026 observance added weight. This year’s theme, drawn from 1 Chronicles 16:24, is “Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations,” and the task force says tens of thousands of prayer gatherings will be held nationwide May 7.

The Brunswick program will be held in a public spot that has become the local focal point for the observance. If weather forces a change, the rain location will be the Elks Lodge at 179 Park Row, directly across from the gazebo. The setup signals that the event is meant to be visible and accessible, not tucked away inside one congregation’s sanctuary.

Organizers are also building the observance around more than worship alone. The program will include worship, prayer and a Patriotic Presentation, and the list of concerns to be lifted up spans the nation, government, military, business, education, churches, families and people who are struggling. That breadth shows the event is being presented as an invitation to anyone who wants to take part in a moment of public reflection, not only to members of a single church.

A pre-rally is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Gospel Light Fellowship, 35A Gurnet Road in Brunswick. Rev. Arden Cross is listed as the local contact for information at 522-5611. The local structure points to faith leaders and volunteers driving the observance, while keeping the message open enough for other residents to attend.

Brunswick has done this before. A 2025 National Day of Prayer observance at the Town Mall Gazebo also began at noon and included prayer, special music and patriotic selections, with prayers offered for family, education, churches, businesses, media, government, the military and those in need. Maine Gov. Janet T. Mills has also issued a National Day of Prayer proclamation, noting that citizens should recognize the observance in ways that fit their own religious or spiritual beliefs.
