Armed suspect manhunt closes Georgia polling place, delays election results
An armed-suspect manhunt shut down an Ison Springs Elementary polling place for hours and held up Fulton County results until the final site closed.

An armed-suspect manhunt in north Fulton County shut down one polling place for hours Tuesday and slowed the county’s election-night reporting, testing how quickly officials could protect voters while keeping the count moving.
The affected site was Ison Springs Elementary School in Sandy Springs, where voting stopped after a public-safety incident near Morgan Falls Overlook Park. Police said the episode began after a dispute with another person. A 911 caller later reported hearing possible gunshots in the area, and officers described the suspect as wearing military-style gear and carrying a gun. No injuries were reported.
Fulton County extended voting at Ison Springs Elementary until 11:02 p.m. after the closure. The North Fulton Training Center, another Election Day polling place, remained open for voters assigned there, but county elections officials said they would not release results from any other polling locations until the final site closed. That decision meant the disruption at one precinct carried countywide consequences for the pace of reporting in Georgia’s May 19, 2026 General Primary / Nonpartisan Election.
Deputy Secretary of State Matthew Tyser said Fulton County was expected to seek a four-hour extension for voters Tuesday evening and that officials believed the request would be granted at the affected polling location. Sandy Springs police said the suspect was in custody by Tuesday evening, bringing the manhunt to an end after several hours of uncertainty around the school and surrounding streets.
The episode underscored a basic stress test of election administration: whether local systems can absorb a sudden emergency without denying access or eroding confidence in the count. Fulton County’s extension kept the doors open longer for voters at Ison Springs Elementary, but the delay also exposed how dependent countywide transparency can be on the last polling place still operating.
