Father urges caution after 15-year-old dies at Swanholme Lakes
A 15-year-old died at Swanholme Lakes as Lincoln hit 35C, prompting his father to warn swimmers to take extra care.

Warm weather drew people toward open water, but Swanholme Lakes became the scene of a fatal reminder that heat does not make water safe. Fifteen-year-old Declan Sawyer died after getting into difficulty in the Lincoln lakes, where emergency services were called at about 2.30pm on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Lincolnshire Police later said their dive team found a body in the water that evening. With the family’s agreement, officers named the boy as Declan Sawyer. The site, a former quarry and nature reserve on the edge of Lincoln, can pose risks even on bright days, when swimmers may be tempted by the weather without weighing the conditions beneath the surface.
Declan’s father, Carl Sawyer, paid tribute through police and urged others to take extra care while swimming. He described his son as “our darling boy”, a funny and outgoing young man who loved fishing and football, had a cheeky smile, and was deeply loved by family and friends. Police said the loss would be felt not only by Declan’s friends but across the wider community.
The incident came as Lincoln was forecast to reach 35C, adding to the risk for anyone considering a spontaneous dip. Water-safety charities warn that cold-water shock can hit even experienced swimmers as soon as they enter water at 15C or lower, causing panic, loss of control and, in severe cases, drowning.
RLSS UK says an average of 328 people in the UK and Ireland die from accidental drowning each year. RoSPA advises swimmers to check conditions, heed local advice and avoid impulsive swims, especially when water looks inviting but may still be dangerously cold beneath the surface.

Lincolnshire Police also asked the public not to speculate or share unverified information, saying it can cause further distress to the family. Officers noted that the tragedy came at the start of half-term week and urged anyone affected to seek help and support.
The death at Swanholme Lakes follows a familiar pattern seen in open-water tragedies: a hot day, a tempting setting and a hidden hazard that can overwhelm a swimmer in moments.
