A black Suzuki Swift mounted the pavement on Friar Gate just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, driving through a crowd of pedestrians on one of Derby's busiest nightlife strips and sending seven people to hospital. Authorities said those struck suffered "serious but not life-threatening injuries."

A 36-year-old Derby man, originally from India but a UK resident for a number of years, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody. Officers were called to the scene within seconds of the attack and stopped the black Suzuki Swift seven minutes later.

Counterterrorism officers are assisting the local investigation, a step Derbyshire Constabulary Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said is standard practice for incidents of this nature to ensure all motives are examined and specialist resources are available. Aldred was explicit, however, that the involvement of counterterrorism police "does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism," adding that investigators were "keeping an open mind" about motive while pursuing forensic, CCTV and witness leads.

Friar Gate is a popular area filled with bars, restaurants and shops. Video and bystander posts circulating after the incident showed emergency services treating the injured on the pavement before loading several people into waiting ambulances. East Midlands Ambulance Service sent three paramedics in three separate vehicles to respond to the scene. A section of Friar Gate remained closed into Sunday, with forensic investigators working inside a cordon. Aldred acknowledged the disruption, saying, "I also want to thank the members of the public and staff from local businesses in Friar Gate, who helped officers with first aid in the immediate aftermath of the incident."

Derbyshire Police urged the public not to panic. "Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public," the force stated.

Because counterterrorism specialists are now involved, investigators will review the arrested man's digital footprint and travel history alongside any potential links to extremist networks, even as standard criminal inquiries continue in parallel. Vehicle forensics, mobile phone data and CCTV footage from nearby businesses and private homes will all feed into efforts to reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision. Derbyshire Constabulary has appealed to anyone with video or images from the scene to come forward.

The next critical junctures in the case are a formal charging decision, a mental health assessment of the suspect if investigators pursue that line of inquiry, and any changes to event security protocols along Friar Gate, a corridor that draws large crowds on weekend evenings throughout the year.
