Saturday night tram collision at Hilton Waikōloa Village suspends service
Two resort trams collided at Hilton Waikōloa Village about 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026; no injuries were reported but tram service is suspended, disrupting guest transport.

Two internal resort trams collided at Hilton Waikōloa Village just after 8 p.m. Saturday night, Jan. 31, 2026, forcing emergency crews to respond and prompting the resort to suspend tram service until further notice. The crash occurred across from the Nui Italian Restaurant on the resort grounds, which span about 62 acres along the Kohala Coast.
Guests on board were evaluated on-site and the resort reported no injuries. An anonymous couple visiting from Alaska described the scene, saying, “The two trams just ran into each other full of people.” An Instagram post by another guest described hearing a sudden “loud boom” after the collision. Emergency crews were on scene shortly after the incident, and resort staff assisted with guest assessments.
The hotel issued a formal statement addressing the incident: “We can confirm an incident occurred last night. Emergency services were contacted immediately, and guests were assessed on-site. The well-being, safety and security of our guests and team members are of paramount importance, and we continue to make every effort to ensure all practices and standards are in line with strict safety and security protocols. We remain available to guests to offer any additional assistance needed. For those requiring transportation, we encourage guests to contact the front desk for details.”
The resort’s internal tram system runs on a track next to the property’s waterways and is used to move guests between the lobby, guest towers, restaurants and other amenities. Suspension of that service has immediate operational consequences for travelers and resort logistics: guests who rely on the tram for routine transfers across the multi-acre property may face longer walks or wait times for alternative transport, and staff must redeploy to handle guest movement and accessibility needs.

Beyond the inconvenience for guests, the incident has modest local economic implications. Hilton Waikōloa Village is a significant service node for Kohala Coast tourism; even a temporary halt to internal transport adds friction to guest experience and could increase short-term costs for the resort in staffing and guest assistance. If investigations identify maintenance or procedural issues, there may be further operational disruptions and potential regulatory review, which could carry compliance costs for the operator.
Investigators have not released a cause, and officials have yet to provide a timeline for resuming tram operations. For now, guests at the resort are advised to follow instructions from hotel staff and to contact the front desk if they require transportation. County emergency and safety agencies may provide additional details as inquiries progress.
The collision underscores how a single mechanical or operational failure in resort transit can ripple through guest services and local tourism supply chains; residents and visitors should expect follow-up updates as investigators work to determine what happened and when tram service will resume.
