Testers Name 2026’s Best Yoga Mats for Grip, Cushion and Sweat Control
CNN Underscored names the JadeYoga Harmony Mat best for grip and stability, while Forbes favors Lululemon The Mat 5mm for cushioning, Iuga lands the best budget pick under $50.

Two major testers diverged on what matters most in a mat: CNN Underscored picked the JadeYoga Harmony Mat for its stabilizing grip and easy care, while Forbes declared Lululemon’s The Mat 5mm the most versatile cushioning choice. That split matters for anyone choosing between hot‑yoga suction, joint protection, and portability.
CNN Underscored’s top selection, the JadeYoga Harmony Mat, won for grip that “helps stabilize your downward dogs and side planks by offering excellent grip,” and for practical features testers liked: two length options, easy cleaning, and that it’s effortless to roll. CNN listed retailer prices as $105 at Amazon and $100 at JadeYoga for the Harmony model.
The New York Times’ testing echoed the grip praise, calling the JadeYoga Harmony Mat a natural rubber mat that “creates premium suction for your fingers and toes to prevent slippage and is especially good for hot yoga,” but also flagged a downside: the NYT noted the mat “has a strong odor that takes a while to dissipate.” The NYT cited an Amazon price of $92 while acknowledging price variation by size and color.

For yogis prioritizing padding, Forbes focused elsewhere. Forbes named Lululemon The Mat 5mm its best overall pick and supplied hard specs: 71 by 26 inches, 5mm thickness, 5.24 pounds, made from natural rubber and latex. Forbes summed up its reasoning plainly: “I deemed Lululemon’s popular The Mat 5mm the best yoga mat overall because of its versatility. It has proper grip both on the top layer and underneath that’s helpful in guiding both newbies and seasoned yogis through their practice without you or your mat slipping around, even if you sweat a lot. And at 5mm thick, it’s cushioned enough to take the pressure off your knees and ankles, and it can absorb some of the shock that comes with jumping.” The New York Times also listed Lululemon The Mat 5mm as a padding pick but warned it is heavier and can be harder to carry; NYT cited a Lululemon price of $118.
Budget buyers got a clear recommendation from CNN: the Iuga Yoga Mat (Iuga Eco Friendly Non Slip). CNN called it an “under‑$50 option” made of certified thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and wrote that while “it won’t have the same level of grip, stability and durability as a natural rubber mat,” it is “a great, affordable and eco‑friendly alternative, especially if you have an unfortunate reaction to latex.” CNN added that the mat “offers better stability and slightly better grip than polyvinyl chloride (PVC) yoga mats, not to mention greater tear resistance.”

Other category standouts across testers include Manduka Pro, which YogaJournal lists at $110 with OEKO‑TEX Standard 100 PVC, 6mm thickness and dimensions 71 by 26 inches, praised for dense cushioning but called heavy at 7.5 pounds and “slippery when sweaty.” YogaJournal’s bargain Gaiam Premium 5mm is $25 at Amazon and Dick’s Sporting Goods, 68 by 24 inches and latex‑free PVC. YogaJournal highlighted Suga’s recycled wetsuit mat at $99 and preserved the brand’s colorful claim that they “reincarnate” suits, turning “petrochemical based landfill clogging neoprene monsters into highly functional instruments of yogic bliss.” The New York Times’ budget pick, Yoga Accessories 1/4" Extra Thick Deluxe Yoga Mat, is a $30 all‑PVC option noted as extra‑long and durable.
Testers across outlets prioritized grip, cushion, durability and sweat management in varying balances. Forbes spelled its testing aim out: testers sought “which mats best supported my body through a range of movements, which ones are durable to withstand daily sweat sessions and which mats are easiest to clean and store.” Before buying, check the material and dimensions that matter to your practice: natural rubber for suction and hot yoga, 5mm for joint protection, TPE for a latex‑friendly, budget option, and manufacturer or retailer prices that vary by size, color and stock.
