Three Charged Over Arson Attack That Destroyed Four Jewish Ambulances in London

Three men have been charged over an arson attack that destroyed four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a volunteer Jewish emergency service operating in north-west London, in an incident that ignited gas canisters stored inside the vehicles and drew condemnation from the highest levels of British government.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorized charges on April 3 against Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton in east London, and a 17-year-old boy whose name is withheld under UK youth justice conventions. The teenager, who holds dual British and Pakistani nationality, was arrested in Walthamstow. All three face a charge of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered and were due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court.

The attack took place on March 23 in the Golders Green area, a neighborhood at the center of London's Jewish community. The ambulances, belonging to Hatzola's volunteer fleet, were engulfed in a blaze that also ignited gas canisters stored inside the vehicles, triggering a series of explosions that compounded both the physical danger and the community trauma that followed.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as a "deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack," and the Metropolitan Police Service referred the case to Counter Terrorism Policing London given what investigators described as the circumstances of the attack and the significant community concern it generated. Commander Helen Flanagan, who heads Counter Terrorism Policing London, led public communications throughout the investigation. Despite the counterterrorism framework, authorities have not formally designated the case a terrorism offense and cautioned against premature conclusions while evidence continued to be assembled.

That caution extended to a claim of responsibility reported by SITE Intelligence Group and other open-source monitoring organizations, which indicated that an Iran-aligned militant collective had asserted involvement. Police confirmed they were investigating potential links but stopped short of confirming any connection.

Two other men, aged 45 and 47, arrested in the early stages of the investigation, were released on bail as inquiries continued.

The destruction of four vehicles temporarily reduced Hatzola's capacity to respond to emergencies in the Jewish neighborhoods it serves before contingency arrangements could be put in place. The service operates entirely on a volunteer basis across communities in north-west London and beyond.

The Westminster Magistrates' Court hearing will allow a judge to consider custody arrangements and disclosure before the case moves toward further proceedings, with police indicating that investigative work remains far from complete.
