The second stage of adaptive qualification opened with a simple number that carries the whole week: top 10. After the Adaptive Open trimmed the field to the top 20 athletes in each division, the Adaptive CrossFit Semifinals by WheelWOD became the last virtual gate before the 2026 Adaptive CrossFit Games by WheelWOD in San Jose.

The semifinals ran May 14 through May 18, 2026, and the format put a premium on more than raw output. Athletes had to complete and submit workouts inside the published window, with no centralized in-person venue to smooth out the details. In a division built on execution, that made the clock, the camera and the scorecard all part of the competition.

WheelWOD’s classification system shaped the field long before the first rep. Athletes were grouped by functional ability, not diagnosis, and an official WheelWOD classification was required to be eligible for the Games in San Jose. That detail mattered because the adaptive pathway is not a single catch-all bracket. It is a series of divisions, each with its own standards, all chasing the same prize.

The video submission rules raised the pressure further. CrossFit’s review process checked loading, measurements, rep counts, test guidelines and movement standards, which meant a clean performance still had to survive a clean audit. In a virtual semifinal, a missed standard or a sloppy setup could cost as much as a missed lift.

The reward for surviving this stage is clear. The top 10 athletes in each division will qualify for the Adaptive CrossFit Games by WheelWOD, scheduled for July 24-26, 2026, in San Jose, California. WheelWOD has described that championship as part of a larger CrossFit Games festival that also includes Masters, Teenagers, Individuals and Teams, with the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and SAP Center anchored to the week.

The timing adds another layer to the stakes. CrossFit says 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the CrossFit Games, and the adaptive semifinal now sits squarely inside that milestone season. For the athletes still in the hunt, this week was not just another workout window. It was the line between a highly selective open and a San Jose berth that now feels close enough to measure.
