A 30-pound medicine ball for men and a 20-pound ball for women has become the latest gear check for athletes chasing the 2026 CrossFit Games through the Individual Online Semifinals. The extra load may look minor on paper, but it can change pacing, transition speed and how cleanly athletes move under fatigue when every rep is being filmed and judged.

CrossFit emailed qualified athletes on May 11 that one workout in the June 11-15 window will require the heavier ball. That matters because the online Semifinals are the final qualifying stage for the CrossFit Games and Divisional Games, and they arrive after the in-person Semifinals in the season order. For anyone still trying to earn a place in San Jose, California, from July 24-26, the equipment list is now part of the race.

The shift also favors athletes who can stay efficient when the shoulders and midline start to burn. A medicine-ball test usually rewards repeatable rhythm, breathing control and sharp standards more than raw barbell speed. In a virtual format, that can amplify small mistakes. Athletes who have not tested the exact ball weight, the throwing or target setup and the video angle at home or in their affiliate risk finding out too late that their competition space does not match the test.

CrossFit’s published schedule lists the Individual Online Semifinals from Thursday, June 11 at 12 p.m. PT through Monday, June 15 at 12 p.m. PT. Registration opens Tuesday, May 26, carries a non-refundable $100 fee and must be completed before the competition closes to make score submission valid. CrossFit also says all online scores must be submitted with video and will remain hidden from the public leaderboard until the competition ends.

The field is still limited to the top 2,000 men and 2,000 women from Quarterfinals, which keeps the pressure high even before the first workout is announced. CrossFit has also said the 2026 season includes a Safety Advisory Board, a CrossFit Athlete Council with input on competition protocols and athlete welfare, and a preparticipation medical evaluation requirement for Individual and Team athletes at the Games.

The heavy medicine ball is not just a piece of equipment. It is now a test of preparation, and for the athletes closest to qualification, that kind of detail can decide who keeps moving toward San Jose and who stops short.
