Thompson Italian Wins Inaugural NoVA Wars Italian Edition Competition

After just over two weeks of reader voting, Thompson Italian emerged as the inaugural NoVA Wars: Italian Edition champion, defeating five competitors from across Northern Virginia to claim the regional title.

The Falls Church neighborhood restaurant navigated a bracket that included Burke's Villa Bella, Alexandria's Osteria Marzano, Vienna's Roberto's Ristorante Italiano, and Centreville's Ciao Osteria before facing Sterling's Urbano Modern Italian in the final round. That championship matchup was a tight contest, but Thompson Italian ultimately prevailed to take the crown in the competition organized by Northern Virginia Magazine to determine the region's favorite Italian restaurant.

Co-owners Gabe and Katherine Thompson spoke to what the reader-driven victory meant to them. "Winning this means so much to us because it comes from our community," they said. "We pour everything into this restaurant — the seasonal menu, the drinks, the hospitality — and knowing that our neighbors feel that is the best possible feedback we could receive. Thank you to everyone who voted and who continues to make Thompson Italian their place."

The win put a spotlight on a menu that already had a loyal following. The rigatoni with beef bolognese is a permanent fixture, beloved by regulars and always on the menu. Beyond that anchor dish, Thompson Italian rotates a handful of seasonal housemade pasta dishes, and the appetizer lineup includes garlic bread with scratch-made marinara. On the dessert end, the olive oil cake is a guest favorite, and the tiramisu earned a separate distinction: Northern Virginia Magazine's food critic named it one of the best Italian dishes in all of NoVA.

Thompson Italian operates two locations. The Falls Church original sits at 124 N. Washington St.; the Alexandria outpost is at 1024 King St. Both are open Monday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. (the Alexandria location runs until 10 p.m. on those nights), and Sunday from 4:30 to 9 p.m.
