Pathfinder Society legality hinges on Paizo’s approved options list

Resources and Options For Pathfinder Society Characters is the page that decides whether your Pathfinder Society character is legal. Check whether the option is on Paizo’s approved list before you spend a feat slot, buy a spell, or rebuild around a new ancestry. If a book, ancestry, feat, spell, item, or rule option is not on that list, it is not available for Society play until another campaign document says otherwise.

Start with the approved-options page

Treat the Resources and Options page as the campaign’s legality filter. That page outlines the character rules options available for use in the Pathfinder Society organized play campaign, which is a very different job from explaining how Pathfinder works in general. Home play lets you use almost anything your table agrees on; Society play only allows what the campaign has sanctioned.

Paizo’s Get Started With Pathfinder Society page covers a worldwide roleplaying organization where you can use the same character at any game around the globe. PFS uses the Pathfinder Second Edition ruleset, and as you complete adventures, your character levels up and can take treasure and experience to any table worldwide. The campaign motto is “Explore, Report, Cooperate!”

Use the documents in the right order

When a rule question comes up, the order matters. First, check whether the option appears on the Resources and Options list for Pathfinder Society Characters. That is the shortest path to a yes or no on legality, and it is the page you want in front of you before you finalize a build.

If the option is tied to a rule question rather than a simple sanctioning question, move to the Pathfinder FAQ and errata page. The Pathfinder FAQ and errata page covers general Pathfinder rules and tells you to head to the Rules Questions forum if you cannot find the answer there. That is the place for how the rule works, not automatically whether Society allows it.

Only after that do you go to the campaign-specific edge-case documents. The Pathfinder Society Campaign Clarifications page exists for the cases that the main list and the general FAQ do not settle cleanly. Its companion PDF supplements the Additional Resources, which lists all of the character options that are legal in the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, and it is explicit that the clarifications are not official errata for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Where characters get disqualified

The most common failure point is simple: a player builds with a book, feat chain, or magic item that is legal in Pathfinder generally but not approved for Society. That can happen with a newly released hardcover, a niche ancestry, a specific spell interaction, or a gear choice that never made it onto the sanctioned list. In home play, those choices can be perfectly fine. In PFS, they are dead on arrival if the campaign has not opened them up.

Remaster-era changes created a second trap. The Pathfinder Society and the Remaster blog post, dated Oct. 26, 2023, shows Organized Play has been dealing with campaign questions tied to the new rules direction since the Remaster announcement. The Lorespire Organized Play Guide will continue to be revised as Paizo works to bring campaign rules in line with the Remaster, and it directs readers to a Pathfinder 2e Remaster guide page plus a forum thread for update notifications and issue reports.

A character can be legal in a general Pathfinder Second Edition sense and still need a Society-specific conversion note or ruling. If you are using a remastered option, do not assume the old print text is enough. Check the current campaign guidance.

Know where the campaign rules live

The campaign documents change. The Pathfinder Society Campaign Clarifications page was last updated Wednesday, June 30, 2021, and the Additional Resources page carries the same last-updated date. The downloadable Campaign Clarifications PDF was last updated Thursday, June 10, 2021.

Paizo blog posts from 2012 and 2013, including Guide 4.2 and Guide 4.3 updates, show that Pathfinder Society has long relied on guide revisions and campaign-specific rulings.
