Pathfinder Society updates remaster rules and new ancestries

The hub is doing more of the heavy lifting now

The Pathfinder Society homepage is laid out like a real decision tree, not a pile of scattered links. The Core Guide holds the rules everyone needs, Player Options and Tools adds optional player-facing material, GM Options and Tools covers GM-specific additions, and Supplemental Materials collects boons and other campaign resources. The same hub also points directly to remaster rules for Pathfinder Society play, pregenerated characters, the character options allowed for Pathfinder Society, and FAQ and errata updates for Pathfinder rulebooks.

Using one reference point means fewer arguments about whether a legacy option still works, fewer pauses while someone hunts for an old clarification, and fewer cases where a GM and player are operating from different assumptions.

What changed for character building

The biggest practical change for players is that the guide is not treating ancestry access as frozen. The character creation guidelines now add jotunborn and stryx to the always available ancestries, which is exactly the kind of update that changes what you can put on a sheet before session one. If you were waiting on a clean answer for whether those ancestries fit Society play, the guide now gives it to you.

That sits inside a broader legality framework that Pathfinder Society uses everywhere else: rarity, access, and availability. Standard options follow the printed rules. Limited options need a boon or another Society source. Restricted options show up only in rare special cases. If you are building a character for organized play, the first question is not “do I like this option,” but “what bucket does this option fall into?”

Paizo’s later changelog entries sharpen that language. Version 7.00 replaces references to “Paizo-published” materials with “approved for Pathfinder Society play,” which is cleaner, tighter language for a campaign that has to handle both old and new books without confusion. Version 7.00 also adds jotunborn and stryx to the always available list.

The remaster rollout is being handled as a living rules document

Paizo did not flip every Society table to Remastered rules at once. Its Remaster planning put Pathfinder Society scenarios on a delayed track, with scenarios not beginning to use Remastered rules until Year 6 began at Gen Con 2024. Characters, however, had to move faster than scenarios did, which is the kind of detail that matters if you are trying to keep a legal build together across a transition period.

That approach was built to avoid forcing players to rebuild characters from scratch while still keeping as much prior material usable as possible. Paizo was working through the conversion with dedicated Additional Resources volunteers and six staff members. The remaster notice states that the guide will keep being revised as campaign rules are brought in line with the Remaster.

The remaster notice points readers to a Pathfinder Society forum thread for update notifications and issue reporting, giving players and GMs a formal place to flag stale rules or corner cases.

The changelog shows how often the target is moving

This is not a one-and-done conversion sheet. Version 6.01 on November 6, 2024 updated ancestry availability for Player Core 2 options. Version 6.03 on January 29, 2025 removed interim remaster references and revised text about Remaster Rebuild expiration and deities who died. Version 6.04 on February 28, 2025 corrected spellcasting service costs.

The pace continued into the next version bump. Version 7.00 on October 5, 2025 brought the wording shift to “approved for Pathfinder Society play” and added jotunborn and stryx. Version 7.01 on October 6, 2025 added a reference to the VO Handbook. Version 7.02 on February 22, 2026 revised playtest rules so classes can continue after playtest ends, following a blog announcement.

Why the wider Pathfinder Society infrastructure still matters

Pathfinder Society is a worldwide fantasy roleplaying living campaign in Paizo’s Organized Play program, and its public motto is still Explore, Report, Cooperate. Players show up at local game stores, conventions around the world, and home tables with the expectation that their characters, chronicles, and rewards all still line up.

A new player can start clean, a returning player can see what changed, and a GM can check legality before the session starts instead of improvising rulings in real time.
