BLM lifts seasonal fire restrictions in northeastern Arizona counties

BLM-managed land in Navajo and Apache counties is back under normal summer fire rules after the Bureau of Land Management lifted seasonal restrictions on July 17, 2026. Improved conditions and ongoing monsoon activity reduced fire danger across the two-county stretch that draws campers, van travelers, hikers, and overlanders onto public land.

For people using dispersed sites off the highway, the change matters most at camp. Activities that had been tightened up under seasonal restrictions can now resume under standard land-management rules, including camp stove use and charcoal fires where they are otherwise allowed. That gives multi-day travelers more flexibility on BLM corridors between the White Mountains, rural backroads, and primitive campsites where a hot meal often depends on a simple fire ring or a small stove setup.

Navajo County also maintains its own fire-restrictions page, and county guidance can stay in place even when federal land restrictions change.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management rescinded state trust land restrictions in Apache and Navajo counties at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026. Earlier, the BLM Gila District had imposed enhanced fire restrictions in the same counties effective May 14, and lifted them on July 25, 2025. The Navajo Nation also lifted fire restrictions on September 15, 2025, after improved conditions and reduced fire danger.
