Holbrook Canyon Trail closes weekdays for construction in Davis County

Holbrook Canyon became a weekend-only trail on July 1, and that single rule changes the whole summer playbook in Bountiful. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest shut the Davis County route on weekdays through Aug. 31 while crews and heavy equipment build a new uphill section, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only legal access days during the closure window.

The Forest Service says the closure is for public safety on Trail #1628, and the warning is not window dressing. Debris, trees and rocks may fall onto the existing alignment while construction is underway, and the order covers hikers, bikers, equestrians and pedestrians. The closure stretches from milepost 0.353 to 0.653 and again from milepost 4.022 to 5.0, which means this is not just a problem at one signed gate or one parking lot. For anyone mapping a Wasatch Front day trip, the practical takeaway is simple: Holbrook works only on the weekend, so a Tuesday outing needs a backup. The trailhead sits on Bountiful Boulevard just past the Bountiful LDS Temple, and the route is known for creek crossings, shaded canyon walking and a small waterfall about 5 miles from the trailhead. Davis County says its trail system tops 500 miles, which gives local hikers plenty of room to dodge the closure instead of waiting for the next Saturday.

The best weekday substitute in the same Bountiful bench corridor is Mueller Park Canyon’s Kenny Creek Trail, which Bountiful lists as a 3.2-mile round trip with 700 feet of elevation gain and a connection to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Bountiful also has Holbrook itself woven into its trail calendar, with guided outings scheduled for Aug. 3 and Aug. 22, both after the closure began, which shows how tightly the city’s canyon programming now depends on the construction timeline.

This shutdown is also part of a larger buildout, not a surprise repair. Bountiful opened bids for the 2026 Holbrook Trails Project on March 2, with bids due March 3, and the tabulation shows two schedules for 9,500 linear feet and 10,700 linear feet. For now, that means Holbrook is the rare Front Range-style trail that still gives you a weekend shot, as long as you remember to check the calendar before you drive to the canyon.
