HSS Yogathon Draws 911,340 Surya Namaskars Across 32 States
HSS's 19th annual Yogathon logged 911,340 Surya Namaskars across 32 states, with 4,640 teachers and students adding 50,000 repetitions from 35 schools alone.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA reported 911,340 Surya Namaskars performed across 32 states in its 19th annual Health for Humanity Yogathon, also known as the Surya Namaskar Yajna, according to an HSS press release issued March 26, 2026. The figure represents the collective output of thousands of practitioners who took part in the multi-week initiative, which ran from January 14th to February 1st, 2026.
Participants across all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, nationalities, and faiths were invited to join. The event unfolded as a national relay, seeking to promote the practice and its benefits among all Americans aspiring for a fit body and balanced mind. Religion News Service reported a slightly different aggregate from the same event window, citing nearly 925,051 repetitions completed by over 15,585 participants from 36 states; HSS's official press release puts the total at 911,340 across 32 states. The discrepancy in both repetition counts and state tallies has not yet been explained by either source.
The school numbers alone tell a compelling story. According to Religion News Service, 4,640 teachers and students from 35 schools contributed close to 50,000 repetitions, underscoring the program's reach inside American classrooms. At selected venues, individual dedication ran even higher, with enthusiasts completing over 100 sets per person at temples, community centers, and marathon events coast to coast.
Each Surya Namaskar counts as one full sequence. The postures are performed as a series of 10 physical postures, flowing in a graceful, continuous sequence, traditionally done in reverence to the sun. The practice is associated with both physical and psychological benefits when performed regularly.
The 19th edition builds on nearly two decades of HSS organizing. Since its inception in 2007, participants from 43 states have actively participated in the Yogathon through yoga centers, community organizations, schools, and colleges, and those participants have performed over four million Surya Namaskars over the past several years. The program has drawn formal recognition well beyond the yoga community: the Yogathon has received numerous proclamations from American mayors, governors, U.S. Congressmen, and U.S. Senators, and it found recognition in the Congressional Record in 2017. The "Let's Move" initiative of then First Lady Michelle Obama declared HSS as a partner in 2012 in recognition of the Yogathon.
HSS is a 501(c)(3) voluntary non-profit cultural organization with over 233 chapters across the United States. For an initiative that started as a community health awareness drive, crossing 900,000 repetitions in a single annual cycle is a number that would have seemed aspirational not long ago. As recently as the 5th annual Yogathon in 2011, over 10,122 participants performed 988,302 repetitions in 224 cities and towns from 38 states, a figure that still stands as one of the program's single-year highs. The 19th edition's 911,340, spread across a more fragmented relay format blending virtual and in-person participation, reflects both the program's maturity and the evolving way Americans now practice together.
